Rippa Rugby and Waipu Clans

A Waipu primary we have four houses or clans. They are Argyll, Sutherland, Ross and Inverness. Each class collect clan points during the week and at our weekly assembly the winning clan is announced. Also this year we have had some clan sports competitions. Recently we have had a Rippa rugby tournament. We had a round robin competition and in the final Inverness played Argyll. It was a great game with a noisy supportive crowd watching. The final score was 36-21 to Inverness. Well done to Inverness!!

Special thanks to all children that played and to Zane, Johdi and Taine who helped organised and referee the games.

Mathex

Waipu entered the hall of Bream Bay College for the first Year 5 and 6 Mathex competition. We were shown to our table. As I sat nervously, Mr Hooper explained the rules and soon the clock started, our team runner sprinted to the Waipu 1 marker and got the first question, that was one of the seven questions we answered correctly. It was very noisy as 25 teams put their maths ability to the test. We all really enjoyed it as both Waipu teams did well.

On Friday the 15th August two teams from Waipu school went to Bream Bay College to participate in the Mathex competition 2008. There were 25 teams from all over Northland. Our Representatives were Abbie, Bili,Zoe,Isobel,Anna,Kyle,Nathan and Brook.
Mathex is when you get into teams of four and try and solve as many problems as you can in 25 minutes. In your team you have a runner, a recorder, a calculator person and a thinker.

News board

Hi,

Today the stormy weather has got worse than yesterday. the whistling wind blows.

While the cold wet drops of rain drip down to the earths soft crust.

We are going shopping after this wet school day. I'm going to buy a big musha belly

and a smaller one. I will also get some colourful face paint plus something from the cheap and cheerful 2 dollar shop.

Mum will pick us up from the class filled school at 2:30pm.

If we're lucky we will get a dollar worth of lollies.

WHALES BEACHED!!

Our task was to read a newspaper article about beached whales. We then had to take notes and then put them into sentences. Here is Lucas's report:

Up north on a beach, five gray beaked wales washed up and sadly two adults and one calf died as a result of a lack of fish and squid. They must of ventured into close and were washed up. "One of the dead whales had a stomach ulcer like humans get when they smoke or have a bad diet" exclaimed DR. O'shea "The other juveniles were washed out before we could measure them" said DR. O'shea. The result of a bad diet may be because a lack of fish, krill and squid as a result of commercial fishing.
